Becoming comfortable in my autism

“My prize possession at this time is pictures of my uterus, ovaries, and pouch of douglas covered in endometritis lesions,” I said aloud in a meeting full of other professionals. The question was an icebreaker designed to get us comfortable. Apparently, I was just too comfortable.

The silence in the room was deafening, just like I’d seen in a movie when someone pulled the record arm off, caused some scratches, and ending the music. The person before me had said that their most prized possession was their wedding album, and the person before that had said their grandmother's engagement ring.

My boss had a look on her face like I had said my prize possession was a pile of dog shit and sat it down in front of her. Taking in the room a bit more, I decided to double down and be me. “The best picture is of my right ovary that was being choked by endo and plastered to the wall of my stomach. My ovary would have died if I hadn’t had the surgery.”

I opened my mouth to tell more about the surgery when my boss waved her hand and said, “Let’s give everyone else a chance to share.”
